2018 Election

2018 Municipal Elections – Candidate Nominations

The upcoming 2018 Municipal Election will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018. Please note that the nomination period will begin on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 (formerly the 1st business day in January in the year of the election) and will end on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. (formerly nominations closed the 2nd Friday in September).  This is the period of time when the Clerk’s Office will accept nomination papers of those individuals wishing to run for the offices of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Ward Councillor, and School Board Trustee. Nomination packages will be available closer to this time period.

Candidate Information

A candidate is an individual who has filed their nomination to run for office in a Municipal or School Board Election.
A person is qualified to run for office if they:
·         Reside in the Township of Malahide, or are the owner or tenant of land; or the spouse of such owner or tenant;
·         Are a Canadian citizen; and
·         Are 18 years of age or older; and
·         Are not prohibited from voting as outlined in s.17(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise by law.
Nominations may be filed with the Clerks Department from May 1, 2018 to July 27, 2018.  Nomination packages will be available closer to this time period.

Registered Third Party Information

A registered third party is an individual, corporation, trade union, or other body that advertises to support or oppose a candidate or a question on the ballot for the municipal election.  A registered third party is subject to many of the requirements as that of a candidate including filing registration papers, expense limits, financial statements, and are subject to the municipal election sign by-law. 
No election advertising outside of a candidate or registered third party is permitted. 
An example of a registered third party would include but is not limited to a business operating from the municipality or a rate payers group.
A third party may register with the Clerks Department from May 1, 2018 to October 19, 2018.  Further information and registration packages will be made available prior to May 1, 2018.

Questions and Answers:

  1. Who can vote? 

In order to qualify as an eligible elector, you must:

  • Reside in the Township of Malahide, or are the owner or tenant of land, or the spouse of such owner or tenant;
  • Be a Canadian citizen; and
  • Be 18 years of age (as of Election Day) or older; and
  • Not prohibited from voting as outlined in s.17(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise by law. 

      2.  How do I register to vote in the Municipal Election?

Once the preliminary list of electors (PLE) is available, there will be a public notice to review, correct or add your name to the voters’ list. 

  1. Why do I have to wait until May to file my nomination for council?

This is new for 2018 municipal elections.
The nomination period has been shortened.  Previously, the nomination period ran from January 1 to second Friday of September in the year of an election.  The nomination period for 2018 is from May 1 to July 27, 2018.

  1. As a resident, how much can I donate to one candidate? Can I donate to multiple candidates?

An individual may contribute up to $1,200 to one candidate. You may donate to more than one candidate, however, total contributions to multiple candidates from one individual cannot exceed $5,000.

  1. Does a candidate have to live in the ward they run for office in?

No. An eligible candidate for the Township of Malahide can run for office for either Mayor, Deputy Mayor, or for Councillor in any one of the five wards.

  1. Can election signs be posted in a different ward than the one a candidate is running for office in?

No, municipal election signs can only be posted in an area in which the candidate is has filed nominations for.

  1. When can election signs be posted?

This is new for the 2018 municipal elections.
Municipal election signs may be posted starting on the second Friday in September, and must be removed by end of day on the fifth day following Election Day.  This means municipal election signs may be posted from Friday, September 14, 2018 to Saturday, October 27, 2018.

  1. Why have I been asked to sign an endorsement?

This is new for the 2018 municipal elections.  
As part of the nomination filing package of a candidate for council, they must include twenty-five (25) written endorsements of nomination for their position.  A person endorsing a nomination must be an eligible voter in Malahide on the day to which the endorsement is made. 

  1. Can anyone use the Township logo in their campaign material?

No, the Township’s logo is protected, and the Township asserts copyright over its use.

  1. What is a Registered Third Party?

    This is new for the 2018 municipal elections.
